A Room of One's Own

A Room of One's Own is an intimate talk series set in a bedroom. Inspired by Virginia Woolf’s book A Room of One’s Own.

Can you tell us a little about yourself and your journey as an artist?

I came back to drawing to find out what I loved about art again- I felt like I had lost it. I think drawing is the beginning of all art and expression and the body is the most self reflective subject. From there my artistic practice has grown from there whilst staying true to the theme. I want my images to show a body that is free and liberated in some way - or at least multilayered and human.

What role does your personal space play in your creative process?

It's very important- ive worked from home  for the last few months and I feel its been impossible to be immersed into creativity. I think you need to be able to shut the door on work to come back to it as chaos and not feel the need to tidy up or restart. I think the two worlds can co-exist through two separate rooms side by side.

How do you set up your workspace at home?

I don't have a set up- but prefer my own space- one where I put my music on, close the door and step into another world .

What does "home" mean to you?

Wherever you feel safe and secure. I used to think home is the opposite of freedom but now I think home is what allows you to take steps into the unknown; because that safe space is always still waiting for you.

I like to move, to go on a walk- or I like to be still, sometimes even in silence. A long hot bath, and a podcast sounds like my ideal though.

What challenges do you face as an artist, and how do you overcome them?

Imposter syndrome for sure! I think being an artist is so challenging as you must become both critique and self-soothing and this becomes a very tricky balancing act.

What advice would you give to other women trying to balance their creative work with personal life?

Who you are as an artist is a big part of your identity- but it's still a profession, so I think it's good to be clear with your boundaries around work. I think its good to never let one part of your life override another part. Its all about balance.

Do you have any favorite moments of the day at home - morning light, quiet evenings, or something else?

I like the evening. I like that feeling where all the pressure of the day has lifted and there is no expectation. I feel like its a time I can be myself.

You’ve recently moved to Greece, which is such a bold and exciting step. Moving to a different country can be daunting. How has your perception of home changed since the move?

I Think it made me see that home is a concept - not necessarily a physical place. That culture is both dividing and at once communal. It's a challenge to find your place in another culture and not always feel lost in translation. But ultimately I think we all share similar needs and dreams and all our hopes and fears.

What do you love most about living in Greece?

The light- they don't joke about it. I think its difference here- the sunsets are different. The colours the sun casts when it sets almost changes the way of seeing.Even in the darker winter months the light is still warm and serene.

Soft and slow- without rushing. Its the only day of the week where an hour stretches pleasantly. I'd take a late breakfast and go for a walk, switch my phone off and generally feel like its a day off from life.

If you could design the ideal “room of your own,” what would it look like?

It would have big windows, with lots of light, with a fantastic view that opens onto the sea. It would have a beautiful bed to rest, a library of books for inspiration, be filled with plants and the sweet scented. Somewhere I can have space - with blank walls to fills with art.

How does taking a break/ a summer retreat influence you?

A break is essential! if you don't retreat from your routine or usual life once in a while- you'll only reflect on the same ideas. There needs to be a shift in the vision to change your creative viewpoint. Sometimes I think the most important part of the summer break is being bored. It's when we are bored do I think we are ready to start and look at a project again with fresh eyes.
